1. Establishing a Successful Accessible Media Program in Higher Education: An Overview of Workflows, Costs, and Next Steps at George Mason University

Courtney Ward is the Accessible Media Coordinator within the Assistive Technology Initiative (ATI) at George Mason University (GMU). The ATI operates under the Compliance, Diversity, and Ethics Office and is tasked with guiding and implementing a university-wide strategy for addressing the electronic and information technology accessibility needs of students, staff, faculty, and visitors with disabilities. Courtney is responsible for managing the provision of accessible text (textbooks/documents) and accessible media (closed captioning/audio description) programs for the university community. For nearly 15 years, Courtney’s work has largely been within disability services offices at large and small 4-year public institutions of higher education. At the cross sections of disability policy, education, training, and assistive technologies, Courtney has supported the provision of direct accommodations and services for students with disabilities within the post-secondary setting. Her education credentials include a Bachelor of Arts in History from Edinboro University, and Master of Education (Special Education) from Slippery Rock University.
