Beyond Accommodations: How Disability Services Can Promote Disability as Diversity

Emily Shryock is the Assistant Director of the Services for Students with Disabilities office at The University of Texas at Austin where she has worked for 9 years. She works directly with students to determine and coordinate individualized accommodations as well as oversees SSD assessment and outreach efforts. These combined experiences have motivated Emily to create partnerships to impact broader campus change instead of focusing solely on individualized academic accommodations. Emily has been leading an office-wide effort to move from a medical model of disability to a social model that moves the focus from the individual barriers faced by students to addressing the systemic barriers present on campus, and specifically in the classroom. Emily has presented at previous AHEAD conferences (2012, 2014, 2016) and at the 2017 PacRim International Conference on Disability and Diversity.
