“Blind People Can’t Be Data Scientists”: Tales from the Trenches of Faculty Training

Christine Scherer has worked as the Senior Content Specialist at Northwestern University’s School of Professional Studies in the Distance Learning department since January 2014. In that time, she has created a course review and faculty training process that emphasizes web accessibility. She reviews an average of 14 courses per quarter and, using the WCAG 2.0 guidelines, makes recommendations for improving the accessibility of each course. She has also trained numerous faculty and staff in web accessibility best practices. She collaborates with AccessibleNU, the university's disability services office, on a number of campus-wide accessibility initiatives. In addition, she teaches online certificate courses at University of Illinois Springfield, including their Foundations of Accessibility and Universal Design for Learning courses.
