Coming out of the Closet Twice: Disability, Gender and Sexual Orientation

Maria Pena has been employed in the field of Postsecondary Education from age 17 years, starting out as a reader and later a peer counselor for her early mentors, Ms. Lyn Clemons and the late Dr. Steven Fasteau at the Special Resource Center El Camino College.Thirty-eight years later Ms. Pena still works in a DRC program, as the Associate Director at UNLV. Ms.Pena has presented at many conferences, including ADARA, NAAFA, CAPED, CCC Counselor's Conference, and the 2018 Southern Nevada Diversity Summit. She holds a MS in Rehabilitation Counseling from SDSU and a MA in Higher Education from Claremont Graduate University. This past December 2019 she was selected and participated in NASPA "On the Hill," and served as a lobbyist for the organization, meeting with members of Congress in Washington D.C. She is currently completing work on a PSY.D at California Southern University, with plans to obtain an EDD in Higher Education with an emphasis in Law and policy.
