Implementing and Sustaining the Interactive Process in Academic Health Sciences and Medical Programs

Author: Willette Burnham-Williams

I have over 30 years of experience in higher education administration with an emphasis in student affairs and supporting the needs of underserved student populations. I oversee the Department of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at MUSC and was directly involved in implementing the OCR audit recommendations, leading to a focus on improving the interactive process for everyone involved. The Director of Equity, EEO and University Accessibility Services reports to me, and we collaborate with and among 6 colleges (Nursing, Pharmacy, Dental Medicine, Graduate Studies, Medicine and Health Professions -11 distinct degree programs) to fully engage their students, faculty and staff in meeting the needs of students with disabilities. I regularly present to audiences on our best practices to ensure academic success for the underrepresented in health professions education.
