International Students with Disabilities in Higher Education: Issues and Implications

Author: Matthias Maunsell

I am currently a third year PhD student in Educational Studies in Diverse Populations at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. My presentation draws from preliminary dissertation research on International Students with Disabilities in Higher Education, especially qualitative findings from two state universities where interviews were conducted with personnel working in Disability Support Services, International Offices, and Intensive English Programs. Interdisciplinary coursework, including courses in diversity studies, TESOL, special education, and research methods have provided a solid foundation for this research project. As an educator I have worked extensively with international students in Ireland, Spain, Mexico, and Qatar. I have presented previously at state, regional, and international conferences on topics such as dyslexia and the language learner, adult English learners with learning disabilities, and integration of professional development for ESL and special educators.
