Make Their Voices Heard: Developing Self-Advocacy Training Programs for Students with Disabilities

Author: russelml1

I have three years of experience working with first time freshmen and helping them navigate the accommodation process and develop self-advocacy skills to better communicate their needs to campus faculty and staff. This experience has also spanned toward working with graduate level medical school students and developing their advocacy skills while in clerkship or residency. My dissertation research focuses on the development of a self-advocacy training program for new freshmen with disabilities and recommendations for implementation, which I believe has also provided me with the expertise needed to facilitate a discussion on the topic.
