Self-Determination of Students with Disabilities in their First Year at College

I submitted an article to the AHEAD journal on this research. As the first author, I lead the team in analyzing the CIRP data to understand first-time freshmen students’ intentions to seek services at universities. We found that freshmen students self-identify as having a disability at a higher rate than those who self-disclose. Before, during, and after my dissertation, I have worked in the field of transition. This field prepares individuals with disabilities who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2004) to attend college. I currently teach as a tenure-track faculty member at Duquesne University in the School of Education Inclusive Practices, Social inJustice and Disability Empowerment, Secondary Practices and Transition, and Autism Spectrum Disorders.
