Student Leadership and Advocacy at Public Universities: Successes, Challenges, and Future Opportunities

Author: Ryan Machtmes

Ryan navigates the world as a person with low vision. A lifelong self-advocate in higher education, Mr. Machtmes has become a recognizable advocate for students with disabilities at the University of Minnesota. As President and chief executive officer of the non-profit student organization responsible for implementing the initiatives proposed for presentation, an organization Ryan cofounded at the University of Minnesota that supports and advocates for graduate and professional students with disabilities, Ryan directly planned and led implementation of these initiatives. Ryan also serves as Vice Chair for the University of Minnesota Student Senate, as Chair of the Subcommittee on Statistics and Disability of the American Statistical Association, and as Program Co-Chair of the Disabilities and Underrepresented Populations Topical Interest Group of the American Evaluation Association. Ryan’s research involves issues of equity and access for students with disabilities in higher education.
